5 Ways To Prepare Your Furnace For Fall And Winter

Do you live in the Greater Toronto Area and need heating and cooling services? A-Plus Quality, HVAC services in the Greater Toronto Area can help prepare your home for the cold seasons approaching. When cold weather comes, it will not spare anyone. However, you can outsmart it by preparing yourself before it arrives. Keeping your home warm during the fall and winter time will make your home the best spot to relax after work and on weekends. Getting an expert to confirm the nature of your heating system is an important step. So, the question is: how do you prepare your furnace for the fall and winter?

1. Clean and Clear Vents
Your furnace may operate much better when the vents are free. Ensure that there is no object in front of the vents. If these spots are blocked, there will be no proper air circulation. Additionally, clean your ducts so that they can pass air smoothly.

2. Check the Thermostat
What type of thermostat are you using currently? If you are using an old thermostat, consider testing it to ensure it is functioning correctly. It is advisable to get a programmable thermostat. You can set a programmable thermostat to turn the furnace off at specific times to save heat.

3. Replace Filters
Because your furnace has been idle for long, the filters may clog with dust, hair, and debris. When you turn your heating system on, your home may not receive enough heat because the filters are not working. Check out our previous post, Signs It's Time to Replace Your HVAC Air Filter, to learn more about when to change your air filter.

4. Insulate Your House
If your home is not insulated, you may consider fixing the problem before temperatures drop. Insulation helps by keeping the heat in the home. Allow an expert to check your windows and doors to ensure that you won't lose heat to the surrounding when winter comes.

5. Examine Your Furnace
Apart from checking the vents, filter, thermostats, and insulation, you need to check your furnace's performance. Request for a furnace service from A-Plus Quality, HVAC services in the Greater Toronto Area, to have a technician examine your furnace’s function ability and make any pessary repairs.

FAQ

  • How do I know what size unit I need?
If you have any problems with your system, you should contact the contractor who installed the units. All our systems are covered by a 5 year parts, 7 year compressor limited warranty

  • Why is there ice building up on the copper pipes?

There can be many reasons why the refrigerant pipes are freezing up but the most common issue is low refrigerant levels. If your AC unit has ice buildup turn off the unit for at least 4 hours and call us at 416-410-0337

  • What is a mini-split?

By definition, and simply put, a “Split System” is a heating and air conditioning system which has two main components, the indoor unit and outdoor unit. In short, the indoor unit absorbs heat energy in the cooling mode, and the outdoor unit rejects the very heat absorbed by the indoor unit. And the cycle is repeated until the set temperature is met. Although the indoor and outdoor units are located in physically different, hence “split” locations, they are connected and operate as, one system; continuously circulating refrigerant liquid and vapor by means of interconnecting, dehydrated copper refrigerant lines, commonly referred to as a “Line Set”.

  • What is a heat pump?

Heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your warm house and during the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your cool house into the warm outdoors. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide equivalent space conditioning at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating conventional heating or cooling appliances.

  • Furnace is blowing cold air in Winter?

This can be due to Ignition lockout, sometimes could be resolved by resetting the power  and if this does not resolve the issue you should contact a certified gas technician from A-Plus Quality to get this problem resolved!
